CALDWELL, N.J. - Caldwell College senior guard
Torey Jones (Providence, RI/LaSalle Acad.) was selected the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference's Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 24, the league announced today. Jones led the Cougars to two victories last week, averaging 23.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 blocks per game.
Jones started the week with 21 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two blocks in a 60-46 victory at Bloomfield College on Tuesday. The win was Caldwell's first at Bloomfield since the 2007-08 season, ending a string of six losses at the Bloomfield Gymnasium. On Saturday, Jones led the Cougars to a 73-60 triumph at Concordia College with 25 points while shooting 4-of-7 from three-point range. The victory was Caldwell's 13th in a row and clinched first place in the CACC North Division. For the week, she shot 59.2 percent (16-of-27) from the field, including 6-of-10 from three-point range.
Jones is having an outstanding senior season, averaging a team-best 17.2 points per game to rank fourth in the CACC. She also leads the league in three-point shooting (.408) and free throw shooting (.864). Caldwell's al-time leader in three-pointers (230) and free throw percentage (.810), Jones is seven points shy of becoming just the fourth player in program history to score 1,800 career points.
Jones and the Cougars (17-11 overall, 15-4 CACC) are the top seed from the CACC North and will host Philadelphia University, seeded fourth in the CACC South, in the quarterfinals of the CACC Tournament. The game is scheduled for Saturday, Mar. 2 at 2:00 p.m. in the George R. Newman Center.
